Colder and Taller
Brewer's Notes
I wrote this style off for the longest time, until it recently clicked for me. "Colder and Taller" is a Cold IPA... which is a style name I still don't really like. "No one drinks IPAs warm! It's not an ale, it's a lager! Whatever happened to IPL??" I ask to no one, because really, no one should care.
Two things got the chip off my shoulder - an interview I watched from the creator of the style name where he proved he really knows his shit when it comes to lagers and IPAs and he defended that the style really is something special. And the personal realization that IPL is a bit of a misnomer too.
In fact, IPA as a style name has overstayed its welcome and is due for an overhaul. But that's a whole other topic for another day.
"Colder and Taller" is a big rice lager with an enormous amount of hops. El Dorado, Mosaic, and (a first in our brewery) Strata. Mosaic and Strata come off as very "blue" to me, as in blueberries or blue raspberry. Blue is a cold color, so maybe that's why I chose them here. They work really well together and ElDo makes an excellent third wheel.
The beer's name could be a little bit of a flex, or passive aggressive dig at the style, but really it's a reference to a song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHnidn4C6K4) by one of my favorite musicians and it holds a special place in my heart. I'm excited to share this one with you. Cheers
